June 2014 Launch

posted May 13, 2014, 12:12 PM by David Bellhorn

Everything looks promising for our normal June launch.  We are still working out all the details regarding future launches at our Bertram site, but the process is moving along smoothly at this point.  More details will be released as the date approaches.

AARG will be running a booth at this year's Austin Mini Maker Faire on May 3. Let us know if you have a rocketry project to display or just want to help out. Otherwise just be sure to stop by and say, "Hi"!

April 2014 Launch

posted May 8, 2014, 12:20 PM by David Bellhorn

Come join us for AARG's April launch at Hutto on the 5th. This launch will be per Tripoli's Research rules (as we have done for the last several launches). So far, the weather looks OK, but we'll need to dodge some raindrops later this week. With the crops in the field now, we'll have to cancel if we get much rain. So, stay tuned for updates on the status of the launch later in the week.

With the crops present, the setup might be a bit different. Unless there is a good reason to the contrary, recoveries must be by one adult only to minimize any damage to the crops.

This month, we may have a couple of larger rockets, maybe a couple of Longhorns, and perhaps even Ron Parsons with the long-awaited debut of "Stephen". We will be able to support both NAR and Tripoli certification flights at this launch.

February 2014 Launch

posted May 8, 2014, 12:19 PM by David Bellhorn

Come join us for AARG's February launch at Hutto on Feb 1. It looks like we'll stay mostly dry between now and then, and the forecast for Saturday looks OK, although we may have some clouds. So, for now, we're GO for launch.

We're expecting a big turnout this month. The Longhorn Rocketry Association is planning something like 60 L1 and L2 certification flights, so that will keep the range hopping! Add to that Ron Parsons with "Stephen", and perhaps Chad (depending on the weather), and we should have a great launch.

We will be able to support both NAR and Tripoli certification flights at this launch, and by the end of the launch, we should be really good at it.

There is something planted in the field to the north of the launch area. If rockets drift into that area, please execute recovery with one adult only, and try to minimize any damage to the crops. Currently, the wind forecast is from the north, so maybe this won't be a problem.

We will have the porta-potty at the launch again this month. Donations to help us keep it would be appreciated.

January 2014 Launch

posted May 8, 2014, 12:18 PM by David Bellhorn

Come join us for the AARG January launch at our Hutto field.

We will have the porta-potty at the launch again this month. Donations to help us keep it would be appreciated.

AARG will be able to support both Tripoli and NAR certifications. Due to the new road, we request that flights be held below 10K AGL Please let us know if you plan any M-motor flights at the launch.

This launch will be conducted under the Tripoli research rules, which allows NAR-member participation. Please be prepared to present proof of your current membership in one of the two national organizations if you plan to fly high power. The research safety code and safe launch practices documents are available for review at http://www.tripoli.org/

Membership Meeting

posted May 8, 2014, 10:35 AM by David Bellhorn

The location for the AARG membership meeting has been confirmed for Rudy's BBQ on Research Blvd. We'll convene in the board room Thursday, December 19 at 7 PM. Be sure to come early and grab some BBQ! Those gathering for dinner before the meeting generally show up around 6 PM, and we get together in the patio area.

We will have a full agenda. Among the topics so far are the following:

* Officer elections: If you have a burning desire to serve your fellow rocketeers, this is your chance! In particular we have a need for a secretary, as Stu's busy schedule as Tripoli National President creates some schedule conflicts for him in this role. Ideally this candidate would be a Tripoli member.

* IT Needs: the AARG website has served us well for the past 15 years, but it is in need of a thorough reworking. We need to discuss exactly what we want from our website and what changes need to occur.

* New flying field: the search for a new flying field is paramount for our continued health as a club, and we especially need to find a more capable summer launch site. I've also received an interesting inquiry from Andrew Sandoval with the STAC club about their Beeville site concerning summer use of that field, which we can discuss at the meeting.

* Establish dates in advance for 2014 AARG Quarterly Meetings.

Anything else we should add to the agenda? Again, we're meeting at the following location:

Rudy's BBQ
11570 Research Blvd., Austin
Thursday, December 19
BBQ on the patio @ 6 PMish
Meeting in the board room at 7 PM.

November 2013 Launch

posted May 8, 2014, 10:32 AM by David Bellhorn

OK, the waiver is in and we can launch some rockets. It's a bit damp out there, so:

When you drive in, please go SLOWLY to minimize damage to the road. It isn't all that bad, but there are a half dozen areas that are soft or where there is standing water.

The parking area is very wet. I'm not sure how much of it is usable. Before you pull in, you should check the area to make sure you won't get stuck. There's a lot of standing water in the grassy area.

The field is pretty soft but it's possible to walk on it. I think we can set up pads out there, but if we can't, we'll set up on the road (we limit to K motors under that condition). I would not suggest shoes that you're proud of because they'll get pretty muddy.

Things should improve a little more by morning, so come out and fly some rockets.

September 2013 Launch

posted May 8, 2014, 10:32 AM by David Bellhorn

Come join us for the AARG September launch at Hutto. The field has been plowed a second time, so it's in great shape for rockets.

We will have the porta-potty at the launch again this month. Donations to help us keep it would be appreciated.

Please let us know if you plan any M-motor flights at the launch. At the moment, the only one we are aware of is Ron Parsons' L3 attempt. This month, AARG will be able to support both Tripoli and NAR certifications.

Chad will be attempting to make the launch (WooHoo). Please contact him directly regarding your motor needs. http://www.the-motorman.net/ We have not heard from any other vendors. Feel free to post here if you're a vendor coming to the launch.

This launch will be conducted under the Tripoli research rules, which allows NAR-member participation. Please be prepared to present proof of your current membership in one of the two national organizations if you plan to fly high power. The research safety code and safe launch practices documents are available for review at http://www.tripoli.org/

Due to the new road, we request that flights be held below 10K AGL. Speaking of the road, the most direct route to the launch site now is to take Chandler Road from Toll 130 (or University Blvd from I-35). This bypasses Hutto.

It is possible that we may revise the setup of the parking/preparation area. Please look for announcements prior to the launch or when you arrive at the launch.
